DIY Decorative Candle with YSL Logo

Hi guys!

Who loves decorative candles??

Me! *shouted out loud*

Growing up, I never really viewed candle to have any decorative purposes. Candles were only used when we had power outage back at my hometown when I was little. And of course on birthdays. Then as I grew older, I learnt that people enjoy having candlelight dinners, which led me to think "Ahhhh, so they can be useful on romantic occasions too."

Having said that, I only had my new found love for candles starting from a few years ago. I realise that people actually burn candles because some of them smell divine. I also start noticing that a lot of them are really pretty. My all-favourite fragrant would be french pear and gardenia.

In this post, I am going to share my home-decorating ideas using a candle.

Materials:

1. A white plain candle;
2. A mod podge / PVA glue;
3. Masking tape;
4. Some glitters;
5. A sponge brush for easy application;
6. An X-Acto knife.

Instructions:
1. Print out any print that you'd like to have on your candle. I use YSL logo for this project.

You can get a copy of this logo too here: logonoid. I scaled it down when I printed it because I have a small candle.

2. Cut the logo using the X-acto knife to create a stencil. Be careful when you are doing this step as X-acto knife is very sharp;

3. Paste the stencil on to the candle by using a masking tape;

4. Paint the stencil by using mod podge / PVA glue and quickly add the glitters before the glue dries up;

5. Let it sit for a few minutes and remove the stencil;

6. Clean the messy glitters around the logo by using the sponge or cotton bud or toothpick.

Personal tips:

1. Please note that I am not 100% sure if my glittery decorated candle is safe to burn. As I only intend to use this for decorating purposes only (no intention to burn it), I am not worried about it at all.

However, if you plan to burn the candle, I strongly suggest you paint the candle instead of adding glitters (unless you want to do your own research to confirm if the glitters are safe).

Take great caution and use paints that are perfectly safe to be applied on to candles such as this one from DecoArt, not something like nail polishes as they are highly flammable.

2. Spray the glitters with hairspray to prevent glitter fallouts.

3. If this is your first time using an X-Acto knife, take cautions when opening the lid of the knife. Ensure that the knife is secured before you open the lid. You can do this by twisting the metal end of the knife. This is how the metal end looks like:

The blade on mine just fell out as soon as I removed the lid. I was so shocked. Imagine if it fell on to my hands! Thank God I was not hurt or anything.

4. Here are some other inspirations for you to use as the print on your candle. I did not include any poster or cut outs for you guys to print, but I am sure they can be searched easily on google:

a. PRADA Marfa canvas sign, inspired from the Gossip Girl
Image source: B-Darielle

b. Chanel logo

c. a horizontal line or a zig zag print which could be easily created using masking tapes.

If you are going to try this project, please let me know how you go. Tag me on instagram and don't forget to hashtag #ALTFDIY so it is easier for me to find. :)In case you are wondering what the hashtag stands for, it is "aLittleTooFreeDIY".
